Dr Emma Scotter and her team at the University of Auckland sought to quantify the Blood‑spinal cord barrier (BSCB) breakdown along the spinal cord axis, to determine whether BSCB breakdown displays the same patterning as motor neuron loss and TDP-43 proteinopathy. The findings suggest that BSCB breakdown varies along and across the spinal cord axis, in a pattern that is independent of that of lower motor neuron death or TDP-43 proteinopathy.
